Trim Levels (Exterior)
Quite a few different trim levels are available for the XC90, but a lot of the differences have more to do with the powertrain than the exterior features. The B5 Core trim, for example, comes with fog lights and a panoramic moonroof alongside 19-inch alloy wheels and LED exterior lights all around. The B5 Plus trim enhances that further with 20-inch alloy wheels.
The next trim is the B6 Core, which upgrades the drivetrain but offers the same exterior features as the B5 Core. A similar result comes from the B6 Plus trim. The B6 Ultimate, however, is a bit more unique, with 21-inch alloy wheels. The Recharge T8 Core, Recharge T8 Plus, and Recharge T8 Ultimate follow the same pattern with an updated drivetrain and the same exterior features as their similarly named counterparts.
Engine (Power)
As the trim level designations suggest, there are three different engine options for the XC90. The base engine, however, already packs quite the punch. Known as the B5, this 2-liter turbocharged inline-four mild-hybrid system boasts 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The B6 engine, on the other hand, is similar in setup but manages to output 295 horsepower with 310 pound-feet of torque. The 2-liter turbocharged inline-four electric motor, the T8 Recharge, offers 455 horsepower with 523 pound-feet of torque.
Performance
Much of the XC90's performance is designed around maximizing comfort, so you won't notice many bumps and dips in the road thanks to its advanced suspension. Additionally, you'll find incredible acceleration with the Recharge plug-in hybrid model that can go from 0 mph to 60 mph in under five seconds, which is stunning for a crossover of this size. The adaptive air suspension that's only available on the Ultimate trim increases performance too, enhancing your control over the vehicle.
Interior
Inside the XC90, the interior is spacious and advanced, with room for up to seven passengers. Simulated leather is standard on the base model, while every other variant gets real leather or the option for a wool-based fabric. Heated and power-adjustable front seats are standard even in the base model, and it also comes with memory settings. If you're trying to carry cargo, there's 15.8 cubic feet of space behind the third row. Fold all the seats down, however, and you'll find yourself with 85.7 cubic feet of space.
Safety Features
Like much of the XC90, onboard safety features are state-of-the-art. The Pilot Assist system puts adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist together into one semi-autonomous driving mode to enjoy. Of course, other features like forward collision warning with automated emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert are standard too.
